Where is your mindset?

Colossians 3:1,2
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Thesis
As a consequence of us being seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), we are to have our minds set on this reality. Our thinking and emotional energy is to be focused on heavenly realities and we are to put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature (Col. 3:5) while we clothe ourselves in Christian virtues.

Introduction
When we are truly heavenly minded there is a practical component that plays out in our lives that sheds abroad love and goodness to everyone we come into contact with.

People who are so heavenly minded they are no Earthly good are not truly heavenly minded. They may have knowledge or some type of pseudo spirituality but they are not truly connected to heaven.

Meddling Moment

I’ve noticed a pattern in people that if there is something about their lives they don’t like they are quick to assign a source to the problem that is outside of their ability to control. The whole time that really isn’t the problem but a convenient scape goat get’s created that allows the person to delude themselves into thinking there’s nothing they can do about it thus giving them a way out of having to overcome the situation.

I believe my spirit is alive in God but my mind needs to be renewed and washed to a different reality that is found in Christ. The course of my life is set by this mind so it’s imperative that I make it submit to heavenly realities.

We are instructed to take every thought captive and demolish wrong thinking.
 
2 Corinthians 10:4,5
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Romans 12:2
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Last week, in looking at Colossians 3:5-9, we looked at “what not to do”. This week our focus is going to be in Colossians 3:12-15 where we will look at how heavenly minded people are to think and behave.

Heavenly Minded Behavior

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with…

1. Compassion – a sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it
  • Empathy - the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.
Parable of the Good Samaritan

Luke 10:30-37
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

2. Kindness - of a friendly, generous, or warm-hearted nature, showing sympathy or understanding; charitable.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with…

3. Humility- not proud or haughty : not arrogant or assertive; reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission.

Philippians 2:5-11
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

4. Gentleness - free from harshness, sternness, or violence

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with…
 
5. Patience - bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint , manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with…
 
6. Forbearance- a refraining from the enforcement of something (as a debt, right, or obligation) that is due.

7. Forgiveness of the Lord

Matthew 18:23-35

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. 29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’ 30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Where is your mindset?

Sometimes, in order to tell us what to do, the Bible will also tell us what not to do. Here in Colossians 3 we see a list of where our mind and thus behavior will be if our thinking is not heavenly but still connected to our earthly nature.

Earthly Minded Behavior
 1.  Sexual immorality     
 2.  Impurity                    
 3.  Lust                            
 4.  Evil desires               
 5.  Greed = Idolatry      
 6. Anger
 7. Rage
 8. Malice
 9. Slander
10.Filthy language

Sexual Immorality

Sexual immorality, impurity, and lust would be any thought or action of lust directed toward anyone you are not married to. The only Biblically sanctioned sexual relationship is a marriage between a man and a woman.  All other sexual fantasies, meditations, or actions are sin.

Hebrews 13:4
4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

Job 31:1
“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.

Matthew 5:27,28
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Evil Desires
  • Wanting the wrong things.
  • Having my focus and ambition set on things that are outside of God’s plan for my life.
Greed=Idolatry

When a person is looking for money to do for them what God wants to do then they are greedy idolaters.

Matthew 6:24
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Anger, Rage

Angry for selfish reasons.

James 1:19,20
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

Ephesians 4:26
26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

Jesus healed Angry

Mark 3:5
5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.

Malice
Harboring bitterness, lack of moral excellence, of poor quality, vengeful.

Slander
The utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation through spreading their innuendos and criticisms in the church.

Filthy Language

Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Some Scriptures on Prayer

Matthew 5:44
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Matthew 6:5-8
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.  7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Matthew 6:9-13
9"This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,  10your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  11Give us today our daily bread.  12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

 Points to consider in light of the above scriptures
  1. Pray for those who persecute you  
  2. Hypocrites pray to be noticed by men. 
    1. There is nothing wrong with public prayer as long as you are praying for an audience of One
    2. Don't show off.
  3. Pray to your Father who is unseen and he will reward you. 
    1. Luke 12:3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. 
  4. Prayer is more about quality than quantity. Pray like God already knows what you are going to say before you say it. (because He does) Pagans pray with many words.
  5. Recognize God for who He is.  When we pray it’s good to address and recognize the Father like nature and heart of God.  God is a good and loving Father.
  6. Give him adoration for who he is Holy, consecrated, unique, wonderful, sacred and revered.
  7. God’s kingdom to be established
    1. The rule and reign of Jesus Christ in the hearts of men, women youth and children.
    2. Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
  8. God’s will to be established
    1. The same way on the Earth as it is in Heaven
    2. Revelation 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."  In Heaven there is...
      1. No sickness or pain. Rev. 21:4
      2. No sorrow, or crying, or mourning. Rev 7:17 Rev. 21:4
      3. No violence or wars, but only perfect peace and rest. Job 3:17 2 Thess. 1:7
      4. No more death. Luke 20:36 Rev. 21:4  
      5. No more hunger or thirst. Rev 7:16-17
  9. Take care of our natural needs.  
    1. God knows what we need and is a good Father. 
    2. He can provide for us and give us daily sustenance.
  10. Forgive our debts and release those who owe us.  
    1. It’s important that we treat others the way we want to be treated. 
    2. We should be merciful because the same measure of mercy we extend to others will be extended to us by God.
      1. Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
      2. James 2:13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
  11. Help us avoid temptation.  Don’t put yourself into situations where you are going to be tempted.
    1. Temptation is from the Devil
      1. Overcoming temptation - no growth
    2. Tests come from the Lord
      1. Overcoming a Test - Promotion
    3. Mark 14:38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
    4. 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
  12. Deliver us from the Devil
    1. We need protection from the outside as well as possible renovation on the inside.
    2. The devil can have access to people via legal and illegal entry points.
Let’s pray like Jesus prayed. If we can pray like Jesus prayed we’ll live more and more like Jesus did doing the things he did and even greater things because He is now with our Heavenly Father.

Being Truly Spiritually Minded


Makes us Earthly good

Overview
The concept so heavenly minded he was no earthly good is actually a misnomer.
We see in Christ the most heavenly minded person in world history who did the most Earthly good.
A new Cliché, “The more heavenly minded you are the more Earthly good you will do.”

People who are so “spiritually” minded they are not earthly good are really flaky and weird. I try to avoid any kind of spiritual discussion unless I’m targeting their redemption.

The lost world out there is looking for something that is real. They have real needs and problems and are looking for the practical solutions.

Truly heavenly minded individuals are doing good.
They are practically relevant
Discuss a situation where you were involved with a person who had all the trappings of spirituality but didn’t seem to have any real substance.

The first component to being spiritually minded is understanding that Jesus and the father are one.

John 14:9-11
9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

From this foundation flows all other spiritual thoughts. If this is not your spiritual foundation your spirituality is false and you are living in deception. It’s very popular to be “spiritual” however this false spirituality is a deception of the enemy to keep a person from the truth only found in Jesus Christ.


Can we be Heavenly Minded?
1 Corinthians 2:16
"For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
Yes

Our Minds are made Spiritual only in Christ

2 Corinthians 3:14
But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.
Who are the people the Holy Spirit is talking about here in 2 Corinthians? Were these people spiritual?

There are many trappings of spirituality in the world that relate to crystals, nature, angels, idols, potions, education, etc. but the only way to be truly spiritually minded is in Jesus Christ.

Acts 10:38
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. What should a spiritually minded person do?

Spiritually minded individuals go about doing good and bring healing with them, or people get healed who are around them. I believe this healing predominantly refers to physical infirmities but I also believe it includes mental health and emotional health as well.

So if you get around a “spiritually” minded person and feel crazy or distressed in their presence either you have some kind of demonic problem or they are not spiritually minded after all.

2 Corinthians 4:4
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

What does the Devil do according to 2 Corinthians 4:4?

Jesus is the very image of God.

2 Corinthians 11:3
But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

The Battlefield
The battlefield where the enemy is trying to take over your life is in your mind. If he can have your mind he can have everything else. It’s vitally important that Jesus is Lord of our thoughts. If he’s not the Lord of our thought life it won’t be long until he’s not Lord of anything.

Deceptive Philosophy
Colossians 2:8
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Set your Mind on the Spirits Desire
Romans 8:5
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
The Holy Spirit Desires us to Walk in…the fruits of his Spirit. When we plant our roots into Christ we can’t help but produce his fruit. When we’re planted into something else we will produce death.

Deceitful Desires
Ephesians 4:22
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;

A deceitful desire is wanting something that will ultimately bring you long term harm. However when you are in the wanting stage you can’t / won’t see the long term consequences of receiving what you want. All you see are the benefits.

Proverbs 15:22
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Proverbs 11:14
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

Make sure your advisers are Holy Spirit advisers who are living in a lifestyle that is pleasing to God.

Philippians 4:6,7 (Amplified)
6Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition ([b]definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. 7And God's peace [shall be yours, that [c]tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [d]garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

The Peace of God is our Guard
Before you make any major moves it’s important to identify peace. Moving into a situation where there isn’t peace in your heart is likely to be a bad choice.
