Keeping an Eye on Things

The Sons of Issachar

1 Chronicles 12:32a
from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do

In the military campaign to turn Saul’s kingdom over to David, it seems that the sons of Issachar were the advisors or wise men in the ranks. The majority of the others are warriors.

Ezekiel’s Call to be a Watchman

Ezekiel 33:1-7
The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman, 3 and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people, 4 then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head. 5 Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head. If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’ 7 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.

The ministry of the watchman is not very rewarding because you want to be wrong and you are not very popular because your message is “negative”. However, sounding the alarm is your responsibility and if you fail in that responsibility you will be held liable before God for not raising your voice. It’s not a ministry for those who want to be popular.

Instructions from Jesus

Matthew 16:2,3
2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

In some ways I believe interpreting the signs of the times is very spiritual because it would seem that very few people are doing it but in other ways this activity is rooted in a form of wisdom that I believe is readily available to anyone that desires to have it.

James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

This word from Jesus in the context of the Pharisees demanding a sign, is clearly an indictment against being unable to interpret the signs of the times. Being unable to know what the future holds based on basic facts is something that Jesus expects us to be able to do.   In order to do this, our heads must be removed from the proverbial sand.

It’s important to understand that not everyone thinks like you do. Some do have wicked agendas they are attempting to accomplish. It’s important to listen to the words of people and especially watch what they do.

What you are doing speaks so loudly I can hardly hear what you are saying.

"Bread and Circuses" (or bread and games) is a metaphor for a superficial means of appeasement.

In the case of politics, the phrase is used to describe the creation of public approval, not through exemplary or excellent public service or public policy, but through diversion; distraction; or the mere satisfaction of the immediate, shallow requirements of a populace, as an offered "palliative." Juvenal said it was a simplistic motivation of common people. The phrase also implies the erosion or ignorance of civic duty amongst the concerns of the common man.

Roman politicians devised a plan in 140 B.C. to win the votes of these new citizens: giving out cheap food and entertainment, "bread and circuses", would be the most effective way to rise to power.

I agree I’d rather watch the final 4 for 2 hours than c-span for 2 hours but you and I as American Christians have a responsibility to ourselves, children, and fellow man to keep an eye on things in our world. Jesus said so.

Media – Most media outlets are heavily funded. One has to remember that it’s unwise to bite the hand that feeds you so understanding the funding sources is something any good watchman should consider before jumping on any idea as fact. The motive of the “trumpet blower” should be factored into any information one receives.

It’s been my experience that people who’ve been abused or neglected by authority figures during formative years of life tend to see authority figures in a different light than those who have not been through these experiences. Not to say they are right or wrong due to these experiences but it should be factored in when trying to understand the signs of the times.

Chicken Little called for calamity with the phrase, “The sky is falling” and at times we may run into people who are “Chicken Little's”.  Sorting through information in this information age while removing personal pre-dispositions can be difficult. Sometimes if we look hard enough we can find what we’re looking for. Even if it’s really not there or only there in a very small way.

One question a watchman has to ask themselves is, “Who do I trust?” and why.

One thing to consider is a “watchman” who is simply capitalizing on the fears of people. There will be a story on radiation falling on America from a nuclear attack by the North Koreans and then followed up by the sale of overly priced iodine tablets that reduce your chances of getting radiation sickness should the attack actually happen.

Is the attack possible? Sure.  Is it likely?  I don’t know. What’s the cost of Iodine tablets off the crony watchman’s website? Is it fair market price? Is the cost worth the protection it potentially could give you?

The Denver Post, on February 15th, ran an Associated Press article entitled Homeland Security aims to buy 1.6b rounds of ammo, so far to little notice.  It confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an open purchase order for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition.  As reported elsewhere, some of this purchase order is for hollow-point rounds, forbidden by international law for use in war, along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers. Also reported elsewhere, at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month.  Therefore 1.6 billion rounds would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years.  In America.

Fact #1 Jesus is coming back.

Fact #2 He’ll be looking for some things when he returns.

Fact #3 We can speed his return

Final Point:  what is the Gospel of the Kingdom?

Jesus is Coming Back!

Acts 1:9-11
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

The coming of Christ will be instantaneous and worldwide. "For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." —Matthew 24:27

The coming of Christ will be visible to all. "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." —Matthew 24:30

The resurrection of the righteous will occur. "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first." —1 Thessalonians 4:16

The saved who are alive at Christ's coming will be caught up together with the resurrected to meet the Lord in the air. "Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." —1 Thessalonians 4:17

Jesus will be looking for some things when he returns Jesus is Looking for… Faith

Luke 18:8b
However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Faithful and wise people who will help and feed others the Word of God.

Matthew 24:45-51
45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Speed the Return of Christ?

Speed His Coming

2 Peter 3:10-12
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. How do we speed the return of the Lord?

Matthew 24:14
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

We can’t predict the return of the Lord. No man knows the day nor the hour however we can speed the coming of the Lord by preaching the gospel of the Kingdom to every nation.

What is the Gospel of the Kingdom?

Obviously, central to the gospel of the KINGdom is an understanding that Jesus is the King of the kingdom. In the Bible Jesus, because of his position as king, had authority over sickness, demons, and even death. This was before the ascension. Now seated at the right hand of the father he is interceding for us to also exert the influence of the kingdom according to Romans 8:34.

What is the gospel of the Kingdom?

It’s inclusive of us being sinners, Jesus dying on the cross and me believing in that to be reconciled to God. But it’s really more than that! The Kingdom is within reach or it’s at hand. This is part of the message of the gospel of the Kingdom. The kingdom of God is a different reality than the kingdoms of this world.

The Kingdom has been available for 2000 years.

Everyone who bows to him is a citizen of that kingdom. The Lords prayer teaches us to pray the kingdom to increase from heaven to the Earth.

The terminology “Kingdom of Heaven” is in the gospel of Matthew. It’s used interchangeably in the same parables as Mark and Luke use Kingdom of God.  Matthew was written primarily to Jewish readers. Jews don’t like to use the name of G_d.

Our reconciliation is founded in the death of Jesus.

The Gospel of the Kingdom is founded in everything Jesus did. By virtue of the covenant we also are seated with him in heavenly places with authority, healing power, delivering power, Jesus is the King!

On Pentecost in Chapter 2 Peter preaches that Jesus is alive! V. 32 Because Jesus is alive he’s now seated with the father, raised from the dead and now pouring out the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel of the Kingdom puts an emphasis on a living King. Check out Romans 10:9,10. Our life has to come into alignment with the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The gospel of the Kingdom is focused on Jesus being raised from the dead.

There is more to the kingdom gospel than reconciliation. Reconciliation is very important however there is kingdom life available (at hand) to the citizen of Heaven.

There is a power flowing from heaven (The Holy Spirit) that prompts people to bow to King Jesus.

In the Gospel of the Kingdom, the Holy Spirit is an integral part of the message. The proof of the kingdom is God heals. You can’t separate it from healing and power.

1 Corinthians 4:20
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

The gospel of the Kingdom is intrinsically tied to obedience. If he’s our king we will obey him. The Holy Spirit is available to all flesh in the gospel of the Kingdom.

Acts 2:39 39
The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

You Can Never Fall

2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thesis: There is grace available to the believer as the believer pursues God. This pursuit will release increasing virtue to the believer and prevent the believer from falling or stumbling away from God.

When I was a younger believer in Christ I can remember how strong the world would pull against my new faith. The things of my past would call to me and try and get me to go back to my old ways. When I came across this passage in 2 Peter 1:10, 11, I was very excited because I realized the only reason I could fall was if I walked away. No one and nothing could snatch me out of God’s hand or will. (John 10:29)

My own spiritual success or failure was not based on random chance or the will of the devil. God had made a way for me to overcome and be fruitful for him.

Victim Mentality:
People with a victim mentality, through their own limiting beliefs, have settled into becoming victims of their circumstances. They feel powerless to make changes in their lives because they think that the elements of their lives are out of their control. Having a victim mentality requires a giving up of most, if not all, personal responsibility. When we allow ourselves to be victims, we are letting the people and circumstances in our lives dictate how we will feel, and ultimately, who we will be.

What is attractive about the victim mentality is that things are not the victims responsibility and there is a certain kind of false security and peace in embracing the idea that, “things are not your fault.” However, this double edged sword will also prevent the person with the victim mentality from achieving and overcoming obstacles that they face.

OK, so we have to confirm our calling and election.

Confirm: to give new assurance of the validity of to make sure we’re called.

Calling: a strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence

Election: Chosen by God to have eternal life

I believe God doesn’t want anyone to perish and makes a way available for all people through Christ.

2 Peter 3:9b
(The Lord is) not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance

Matthew 18:14
In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

What are the other 8 things we must walk in?

Add to Faith – Goodness – Knowledge – Self-Control – Perseverance – Godliness – Mutual Affection – Love.

2 Peter 1:8
8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We must add to our faith-
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

The Disciples one day after Jesus was teaching on forgiveness specifically asked Jesus in Luke 17:5 to increase their faith!

Speak the Will of God
Jesus immediately started speaking about how to release faith.

Luke 17:6
He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

I believe we have not because we ask not (James 4:2b) or in this case we have not because we aren’t declaring things in faith.

Hear the Message about Christ

Romans 10:17
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Pray in the Holy Spirit

Jude 1:20

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,

1 Corinthians 14:4a
4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, Prayer and Fasting

Matthew 17:17-21
17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” 21 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer *and fasting.

After adding to our faith we must add to goodness

Goodness - or as some versions put it ‘moral excellence’. It is the ability and desire to stand up for, and display that which is right to a country that is rapidly declining morally.

Knowledge - primarily, a seeking to know, an enquiry or investigation. Knowledge, especially of spiritual truth.

Proverbs 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.

1 Corinthians 2:7-10
7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen,     what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”[b]—     the things God has prepared for those who love him— 10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

Jeremiah 33:3
‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

Add to your Knowledge Self-Control: restraint exercised over one's own impulses, emotions, or desires

It’s relatively obvious that not every impulse or desire should be acted on. Self-Control will help us to see the ultimate outcome of our choices and empower us to choose correctly. These choices governed by self-control will bring about God’s best for our lives. The list of people who have brought destruction to them selves because of a lack of self-control is immense.

Add to your self-control, perseverance-

Perseverance is a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition : steadfastness

The best source of perseverance is knowing the will of God for your situation. If you don’t really know what the Lord’s direction, is circumstances will have a big influence in your decision making process. However, when the will of God is settled, the course of action, no matter how clouded with difficulties, will stay at the center of the mind of the person with perseverance.

Acts 5:40-42
His (Gamaliel’s) speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Add to perseverance godliness-
Godliness, simply put, is having the character and nature of God expressed in and thus through our lives.

Jesus Christ is God

John 14:7-9 7
If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Jesus Christ is perfect theology. The perfect representation of God. Jesus was perfectly godly, walking in full godliness.

Hebrews 1:3a
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being,

Ephesians 4:11-13
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Godliness is part of the covenant and available to the follower of Jesus Christ.

Add to your godliness mutual affection / brotherly kindness:

The emphasis here is human to human relationships. Feeling a tender attachment or fondness for one another. Being of a sympathetic or helpful nature toward one another. This is brotherly kindness / mutual affection.

Let’s face it, who doesn’t want people to behave this way toward them? The more challenging question is do we behave this way toward others? As Christ is forming in us, we will act more and more this way.

And to mutual affection love – The most excellent way.

We will perhaps visit this subject next Sunday. It’s really too large to do justice to and still be mindful of your time this week.

2 Peter 1:8-9
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

The "I Am" God

By Tony V. Hammack

God’s Nature, Our Needs

Thesis: Traditionally the church has been great at teaching people about the God of the Bible. This includes the great things God’s done in the past as well as the things he’s going to do when he comes again. Where the modern church has come up short is in demonstrating the “I Am” nature of God. He’s the God of the urgent, He’s available to be the God of right now.

Names = the character and nature of a person.
Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh, I will be what I will be

Exodus 3:13, 14
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

God exists by himself for himself, and is the uncreated Creator who is independent of any concept, force, or entity; therefore "I am who I am"

Jesus claiming the “I Am” name for himself.

Leviticus 24:16
16 anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

John 10:30-33
30 I and the Father are one.” 31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” 33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

John 8:57-59
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” 58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Now the reader of this passage, without having any understanding of Exodus 3 or Leviticus 24:16, may not understand that Jesus is making himself out to be equal with God and specifically have the name and nature of God found in Exodus 3, the “I Am”, but in light of these two verses we see very clearly that the first century Jewish listeners clearly interpreted what he was saying as blasphemy which is why they took up stones to stone him, Jesus “a mere man, claiming to be God.” (John 10:33)

Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Malachi 3:6a
6 “I the Lord do not change.

Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

James 1:17
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Don’t let anyone ever tell you that God can’t use you or someone else to do something that’s clearly laid out in scripture. Men build doctrines to accommodate their lack of faith and destroy the faith of those that would listen in agreement to their erroneous ideas. God can meet your need and begin moving in your situation right now.

No matter what your need?
  • Spiritual Salvation
  • Physical Healing
  • Deliverance from Sinful Habits
  • Deliverance from Unclean Spirits
  • Widsom/Knowledge
  • Financial Increase
  • Spiritual Growth and Maturity
  • Spiritual Salvation

Acts 16:31
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”

I believe each person has to have a personal encounter with the Lord Jesus to be saved but I also believe that me coming to saving faith in Christ creates an impact on my entire family. I believe I can quote this scripture and believe in faith that my family will come to know Christ if they currently are not saved.

John 6:44
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.

Luke 10:2
2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

Physical Healing

Matthew 12:15
Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.

Mark 6:5
5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. Deliverance from sinful habits

Galatians 5:16-18
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The same faith that saves you is the same faith that sanctifies you. Keep looking at Christ and his atoning sacrifice on the cross for grace to give power to overcome sin.

Deliverance from unclean spirits

Acts 10:38
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

Wisdom/Knowledge

Maybe you need to know what to do in a certain situation.

1 Corinthians 2:10
10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

Financial Increase

Deuteronomy 8:18
18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

Spiritual Growth and Maturity

Philippians 1:6
6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

James 1:4
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Galatians 4:19
19 My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,

Ephesians 4:13
until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Jesus is the, I Am God and can meet your need! No matter what your need!

A look at the 9 manifestations of God’s Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10

The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12v.1 tells us that he wants the church to be informed. He’s noticed that when the Corinthians were lost or pagans they were led astray by mute idols. Now he’s wanting to give the church some guidelines regarding manifestations of God’s Spirit. It’s implied that they may be prone to error due to their gullibility from the past.

The rule is, the manifestations of the Spirit have to give glory to Jesus, v. 3 says, I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. Father, Son, Holy Spirit

John 16:13-15
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Imagine, if you will, a flow chart with the Holy Spirit at the top flowing down into an individual person. What flows out of that person are works. These works consist of service and spiritual gifts. Imagine the flow chart now consisting of many people. There’s only one Holy Spirit but many expressions of the Holy Spirit through people.

God Gives Good Gifts to those Who Ask

Matthew 7:7-11
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

1 Corinthians 12:7
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. Meaning these gifts are not only for you but to help others.

If the gifts become self serving then things are out of order. (Tongues, without public interpretation, are for self edification 1 Cor. 14:4)
  1. Message of Wisdom
  2. Message of Knowledge
  3. Faith
  4. Gifts of Healing
  5. Miraculous Powers
  6. Prophecy
  7. Distinguishing Between Spirits
  8. Speaking in Tongues
  9. Interpretation of Tongues
Wisdom
Wisdom is the synthesis of knowledge (facts). It causes one to draw conclusions that people without wisdom cannot draw. Facts and knowledge are the building blocks upon which wisdom is built. Supernatural wisdom would have a God component to it that would make it elusive to anyone without the Holy Spirit. Sometimes lost people are very wise in their synthesis of facts.

James 1:5,6
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

Knowledge

Holy Spirit Knowledge-
John 1:47-51
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’[k] the Son of Man.”

Faith

Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

The Faith of the Centurion

The Centurion’s faith was rooted in his natural understanding of authority and his supernatural understanding of who Jesus was. Combining these two components leads Jesus to proclaim, “I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”

If we want to be people of great faith like the Centurion we also will have to know who Jesus is. Compare the Centurion to Martha.

John 11:21-24
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Gifts of Healing
As an extraordinary charism, gifts of healing are supernatural enablements given to a believer to minister various kinds of healing and restoration to individuals through the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Greek of the New Testament, both the words gift and healing are plural.

I have noticed that some people who have gifts of healing may have greater success with healing some people with certain diseases over other diseases. I have a ministry friend that says, “Send me people with fibromyalgia”. They’ve seen a lot of success with the Holy Spirit flowing through them in healing this particular disease. I’ve also known a man who could touch a wart and it would disappear within a few days. It seems strange, but gifts and healing are both plural in the Greek.

Miraculous Powers
Every time something happened for the first time in the Bible it had never happened before. Today, in our time, if God did something that was not recorded in Scripture that was miraculous and brought glory to Jesus, there are some in the Body of Christ who would say, “That’s the Devil”. Be open to God doing miracles that don’t necessarily fit into our box, but the manifestation must point people to Jesus.

Signs and Wonders by their very nature will make a person wonder.

John 21:25
25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

Prophecy

Foretelling – Knowing the future, knowing hidden knowledge.
Forth telling – Expressing the heart, mind, and will of God about a situation supernaturally.

1 Corinthians 14:3
3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.

A word of Wisdom regarding directional words. Be careful. You should be able to hear God for yourself any way but if God uses a prophet to speak a directional word please be cautious. You don’t have to do what the person prophesying says. Unfortunately some can “prophelie” their own feelings or use the prophetic platform to manipulate.

A Truly Seeker Sensitive Environment

The gift of prophecy when in operation
1 Corinthians 14:24,25 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

Distinguishing Between Spirits
Demons have various agendas usually tied to a sinful habit or behavior. A spirit of lying for example that influences a person’s thinking and words to lie. When a demon is manifesting they seem to try and mask their true nature because, for a reason I don’t fully understand, they lose part of their hold on the person when their true nature is revealed. In the Bible a name=nature.

In Mark 5:9 we see Jesus asking the Gaderene demoniac’s demon what its name is. The demon answers it’s name (nature or character) is legion for we are many.

When the nature of a demon is uncovered it’s exposed and less likely to retain it’s hold on the person.

Tongues
A sign that consistently accompanies the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:4, Acts 8:12-17, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 11:14-16, Acts 15:7-9

A sign in a one on one setting for unbelievers.

1 Corinthians 14:22
22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; A Language to God 1 Corinthians 14:2 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Personal Edification

1 Corinthians 14:4a
4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves,

Jude 1:20
20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, Interpretation of Tongues

Conclusion

1 Corinthians 12:31 (Amplified)
31 But earnestly desire and zealously cultivate the greatest and best gifts and graces (the higher gifts and the choicest graces).

1 Cor. 14:1
Eagerly pursue and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual endowments (gifts), especially that you may prophesy ([a]interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching).

Proverbs 4:7
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Thesis:
We as the people of God, need to grow in wisdom if we’re going to be successful in this life and properly be an agent of Christ in the world.

Outline:
  • What is wisdom
  • The Admonishment to Get Wisdom
  • How to Get Wisdom
  • The Benefits of Wisdom
  • Christ is our Wisdom
I believe the Bible teaches that there are at least 4 different types of wisdom.
-Types of Wisdom (James 3:13-18; 1 Corinthians 2:10b-13)
  • Natural Wisdom
  • Carnal Wisdom
  • Selfless Wisdom
  • Wisdom from on High
What is Wisdom?
Wisdom is the synthesis of knowledge (facts).  It causes one to draw conclusions that people without wisdom cannot draw.  Facts and knowledge are the building blocks upon which wisdom is built.

It’s often been said that this life consists of the sum total of our decisions and the resulting response of others from our decisions. Consequently, if our decision making ability is so vital to the direction and thus outcome of our lives, we need to make wise choices. Wisdom is the principal thing.

The Admonishment to Get Wisdom

Proverbs 4:7
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get [Wisdom is supreme; therefore get] wisdom.
-Though it cost all you have, [Whatever else you get] get understanding.

Proverbs 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.

How to Get Wisdom
-Not everyone gains wisdom the same way.
-There are two main tracks. The Mocker track and the wise track.

Proverbs 21:11
When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.

Ask God for Wisdom

James 1:5,6
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

Become a Companion of the Wise

Deuteronomy 34:9
Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.

Laid his hands on him in the prayer sense or laid his hands on him in the he worked with him closely for many years.

Read and Study
To grow in natural wisdom a person must be able to accumulate facts into their mind, synthesize the facts, compare them to other processes or systems and then draw a conclusion about the outcome that is correct.

For Example:
The used car you are interested in buying that is blowing blue smoke and knocking. What do you think? Good idea?

Factor in the demeanor of the salesman, any known knowledge of cars and engines, a comparison between other cars that are new, and a correct conclusion can be drawn.

Wisdom can also include a supernatural component. This heavenly impartation adds a new component to natural wisdom.

Heavenly Wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:10b-13
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

The Benefits of wisdom

Solomon our Old Testament Example

1 Kings 3:7-15
7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor —so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. 14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” 15 Then Solomon awoke —and he realized it had been a dream.

Wisdom brought wealth, possessions honor, and a long life to Solomon. How about today?

Ecclesiastes 2:26a
To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God.

Proverbs 9:11
For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.

Proverbs 19:8
The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.

Christ is Wisdom

1 Corinthians 1:30
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

Proverbs 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.
We must seek Christ’s face for wisdom in the time that we live in. Without wisdom to know what to do we can become victimized or miss out on a blessing.

God open our eyes to see what you want us to see. Give us the unction to search a matter out.
