The Woman with the Issue of Blood
Matthew 9:20-22
Mark 5:25-34
Luke 8:42-48

Luke 8:42-48
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45"Who touched me?" Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you."

46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me."
47Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

Points in the Story

1. Jesus is going somewhere else when the miracle takes place. He’s going to the home of a very important person. The synagogue ruler Jairus’s house to pray for his sick daughter.

2. The crowd is listed here in Luke as “crushing”. Meaning everyone else is trying to see something or get something from Jesus.

3. She heard about Jesus and reasoned from what she heard, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.“ The scriptures say specifically that she said to herself.”
This act of “saying to herself” causes her to rise up with courage to reach out to Jesus through the crowd without an appointment for a miracle even though she’s ceremonially unclean.

4. She hasn’t gotten better due to the medical care she’s received but she’s gotten worse!
The Jewish Talmud preserves a record of medicines and treatments prescribed for illnesses of this sort.

Leviticus 15:25
" 'When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period.

5. The woman is there and has suffered for 12 years and is completely broke due to her medical bills.

6. It appears that she may have snuck up behind Jesus to avoid being noticed.

7. All the faith for this miracle is in the woman. We know this because Jesus was oblivious to the woman until she touched Him. He even states, “Who touched me?” in v. 45.

8. Immediately her bleeding had stopped.

9. Jesus calling her Daughter is the only place in the scriptures where Jesus addresses a anyone as “daughter”.

The Greek word translated “healed” actually is also translated “saved.” Here both physical healing and spiritual salvation are meant. The two also appear together in Mark 2:1-12 (Jesus heals a paralytic)

SOZO is the Greek word for healing, wholeness, recovery and salvation. Healing of the body was not separated by Jesus from healing of the person, to be healed by Jesus was to receive God’s salvation. The verb Sōzein means both “to heal” and “to save”.

Salvation is a future event and is also deliverance from the dominion of sin and Satan; it is freedom to love and serve God now.

Malachi 4:2
But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.

Application Points

1.If you have a need, don’t let intimidation stop you. Sometimes we see ourselves as insignificant and disqualify ourselves from receiving things from the Lord that are part of the promises of God.

2. Sometimes we have to press through the “crowd” between us and Jesus.
a. Our crowd can be thoughts, doubts, actual people etc.

3. Faith rises with meditation on the person of Jesus and confession of God’s word. This faith defeats fear that would prevent us from stepping out. We also must defeat fear to receive our miracle.

4. Unfortunately sometimes we put more trust in man’s solutions than God’s. When man lets us down and we lose hope in man we often turn to God in desperation. We should turn to God first but sometimes we don’t.

5. Turning to man for the solutions to our problems will cost us money. Turning to God will cost us everything.

6. Reaching out to Jesus even though you are afraid is O.K. just reach out with resolve and determination. The definition of courage is - firmness of mind and will in the face of danger or extreme difficulty. Being afraid but doing it anyway!

7. Faith is the key component in our lives that unlocks the supernatural from God. Faith that is founded upon the will and word of God and causes action on our part. This is the type of faith we need to have also.

8. True faith always moves God to action! If you don’t get your miracle, examine your faith.

9. How you reach out to Jesus is what he will give you. If you receive him as Father then he will call you son/daughter. If you see him as friend then he will receive you as a friend. If you see him as a historical figure than that’s what he will be to you.
