John 15:5-8

John 15:5-8
5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

1. There is a source of life and you are not it.

James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

2. We have to remain in Christ and he has to remain in us if we’re to produce fruit.

3. When we don’t abide in Christ we can do nothing. We wither like a branch that has no life. It is then worthless and disposed of.

Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.

4. When we abide in Christ we can ask whatever we want and it will be done. However our wants are now his so really we are asking what he wants.

1 John 5:14, 15
14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5. It glorifies God when we bear fruit and SHOW ourselves to be his disciples.

1 Peter 2:12
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
